How an 800 year old tradition is still thriving in Germany

31 January 2008: Stefan Walter a 25 year old piano technician and "journeyman" from Germany arrives at Besbrode Pianos Leeds looking for work and brings with him an 800 year old tradition of apprenticeship still thriving in Germany. Apprenticeship began in Middle Ages and was essential to supply of technical training across Europe. Guilds enforced contracts between master and apprentice.

In classic model of apprenticeship from Beginner to Master there are 7 key stages:

• Beginner
• Student
• Apprentice - bound to indenture to serve another for prescribed period
• Internship - advanced student in professional field gainig supervised practical experience
• Journeyman - Man who works for another by the day. Acquiring greater Knowledge and mastery on the road
• Craftsman - Skilled worker with manual dexterity
• Master - Command of great skill and technique

The Wanderbuch: Stefan's prize possession is his "Wandersbuch" - almost a travelling C.V. A leather bound book containing stamps from companies and countries he has visited. A place where employers can write any feedback for any work completed.

Stefan left Kamen, Germany after a 3 year piano technician apprenticeship. To continue progression from "journeyman" to master he lives according to strict guidelines.

• Must leave home town, not allowed to return within 50km radius until completed 3 years and a day (longer period than apprenticeship)
• Must leave home with 5 euros and return with 5 euros - emphasis on gathering skill not earning money.
• Wears a costume called "Kluft" - travelling suit identifying specific trade. Every button has a meaning reflecting commitment to journeyman practise. Design based on Ship carpenters from Hamburg.

Earring of gold originally worn in case of death whilst on the road. Meant journeyman could pay for own funeral. Knapsack - no more possessions than can carry: sleeping bag, tools, clothes.

Having worked his way through Europe, Stefan is now in the UK for the first time and looking for work.
