31 January 2008: Stefan Walter a 25 year old piano technician and "journeyman" from Germany arrives at Besbrode Pianos Leeds looking for work and brings with him an 800 year old tradition of apprenticeship still thriving in Germany. Apprenticeship began in Middle Ages and was essential to supply of technical training across Europe. Guilds enforced contracts between master and apprentice.

The Wanderbuch: Stefan's prize possession is his "Wandersbuch" - almost a travelling C.V. A leather bound book containing stamps from companies and countries he has visited. A place where employers can write any feedback for any work completed.
Stefan left Kamen, Germany after a 3 year piano technician apprenticeship. To continue progression from "journeyman" to master he lives according to strict guidelines.
Earring of gold originally worn in case of death whilst on the road. Meant journeyman could pay for own funeral. Knapsack - no more possessions than can carry: sleeping bag, tools, clothes.

Having worked his way through Europe, Stefan is now in the UK for the first time and looking for work.
